To a gently refluxing mixture of 1.2 g. (0.05 mole) of sodium hydride and 25 ml of n-hexane was slowly added, with stirring, 10 ml (0.07 mole) of triethylborane. The heating and rate of addition were adjusted to maintain gentle reflux. The hydride slowly dissolved to give a translucent solution which was refluxed for 30 minutes longer. The solvent and excess triethylborane were distilled off, the final traces being removed at 100 C and 1 mm. The residual sodium triethylborohydride was a viscous, colorless oil.
